Compounding

Gastrointestinal

Two problems, one principle: put the medicine on the tissue that needs it. Fissure ointments relax the muscle and carry a local anesthetic straight to the site. GI cocktails arrive premixed in the ratio you ordered, so nobody is combining three bottles at a bedside.

Using it

How to take it.

  • Measure the dose. A fingertip is not a dose, and more ointment does not work faster.
  • Use a finger cot or a glove, or wash your hands immediately afterward.
  • Headache is common with nitroglycerin, most often in the first week. Tell your prescriber if it does not settle.
  • Do not use a nitroglycerin preparation with sildenafil, tadalafil or any other erectile dysfunction medicine. Together they can drop your blood pressure dangerously.
  • Shake a GI cocktail before every dose and measure it with the cup or syringe we supply.
Storing it

How to keep it.

  • Room temperature unless the label tells you otherwise.
  • Keep the cap on, and roll a tube up from the end.
  • Note the beyond use date on the label. Compounded preparations do not carry a manufactured shelf life.

This page describes the preparations we make and how they are handled. It is not medical advice and it does not replace the label on your prescription or the instructions your prescriber gave you. Call us at 910-748-0243 with any question about your own medicine.

For prescribers

What to put on the prescription.

  • The active and its percentage strength.
  • Whether you want lidocaine in it, and at what percent.
  • For a GI cocktail, the ratio and the components.
  • Total grams or millilitres, and the sig.
